You must defend the tree from the depredations of natural hazards and a cult bent on destroying it.

Try not to back track too much, pick up items that aren't far out of your way if you can

One threat might help wipe out another

The order to deal with threats: Boulder and cultist, locusts, fire, vines

Weapon use order: shovel, pesticide, unlit torch, hose, lit torch
